Newton Wonder Report - June 2016

The cricket season has continued well and gone largely as expected this month, with Newton St Cyres winning all the league matches it expected to, but with the strength of the top half of the league showing its dominance and proving too much. However, precious points have been gained even in these matches, with some good performances in the field to keep us in the middle of the league.

This month has included playing 2 of the top 3 teams in the league, Shaldon and Ashburton, which although we performed well, they proved too strong, bowling us out for low totals in both matches. Points were still taken from the matches and performances of note were Usman Manazir’s and Leighton Dayman’s batting against Shaldon and the strongest bowling in the league. After fending off most of the overs from their opening bowlers (including one who was playing premier league cricket last year), Usman scored 23, and Leighton 20. Against Ashburton we managed to bowl them all out with Tom Dowle getting 5 wickets for 34 runs and Jack Withers 3 for 46.

On the other hand, winning performances have been put in against South Brent and Buckland Monachrome. Against South Brent we scored 219 for 9, including 55 for Martin Pearce, 47 for Chris Collyer and 35 for Usman Manazir. The score proved too much for South Brent and we bowled them all out for 164, with Usman taking 5 for 33 and Martin 3 for 24. Buckland’s visit to Newton was a similar story, with our total of 179 (Leighton Dayman-33, Shenan Grossberg-24, Martin Pearce-22) again too much for their team and we bowled them all out for 105, with Jack Withers getting 4 wickets for 16 runs.

The local cricket cup – the Quicke’s cup – was also rediscovered this year and although efforts were made to try and get more teams together for it, it ended up being run as a 40 over match between the Beer Engine and Newton St Cyres cricket club. The Beer Engine showed how strong its batting is and scored a mammoth total of over 300, which Newton St Cyres were unable to come close to and the Beer Engine took the title and the cup for 2016. The whole match was played in good spirit with a barbeque and beers after the match providing a great finish to the day. Now that the trophy has been rediscovered we hope that next year will see a larger number of teams entered and will hopefully become an annual event.

As always, we are always looking for new players so if you are interested in having a game or coming to a practice please get in contact. (paulmccutchion@hotmail.com).
