10 wicket loss in first away league game

Exwick 138-0 beat Newton St Cyres 134 all out by 10 wickets

After their opening day success of last week Newton St Cyres were brought back down to earth as they fell to a 10 wicket defeat at Exwick. After the formality of losing the toss, Newton were invited to bat first. Chris Collyer was promoted up the order to open in the absence of last week's centurion Usman Manazir, and he and Leighton Dayman made steady if unspectacular progress on a wicket that was a bit two paced after heavy midweek rain.
Just after they had claimed their first batting point Collyer departed for 17, chipping a return catch to Ross Pascoe. This brought Dave Church in to join Dayman, and after he was dropped on nought, he built a solid partnership with his fellow left hander. This wasn't broken until the ball before drinks when Dayman was dismissed for 30, Pascoe again the bowler.
Newton battled on until they reached 100-2, but then trying to accelerate the wickets started to fall. Dan Machin, returning to the attack after a good opening spell, took two wickets in his first two balls and from the other end Rehann Caryll was as miserly as ever. Caryll bowled Church for 37 and although Tom Sunderland batted well for his 17, he too succumbed thanks to an excellent catch by Machin.
The final total of 134 always appeared a bit low and the home team's openers Vic Murphy and Kris Calderhead certainly made it look that way. They started off positively and were very severe on anything erring in line or length. Both batsmen reached their half centuries with a flurry of boundaries, and despite 6 bowlers being tried, the match was won in the 22nd over.
