Ashburton 285 all out beat Newton St Cyres 94 all out by 191 runs
League leaders Ashburton were far too strong for visiting Newton St Cyres in their D Division West fixture on Saturday.
Choosing to bat first, the home side set about the bowling with relish and taking advantage of a good wicket and a very fast outfield, swiftly gained the upper hand. Skipper Martin Pearce rotated his bowlers but to no avail, and it was finally a smart piece of fielding from Jo Moretta to run out Ashley Berry for 40 and break the opening stand of 125.
After this breakthrough Tom Dowle (3-51) picked up 3 wickets inside 2 overs to briefly stem the flow of runs, but unfortunately Lloyd White wasn’t one of them, and he duly completed his fourth century of the season. Mole (31), Colwill (25) and Churchill (26) added valuable runs and when White was finally dismissed for 138 by Pearce (4-48), the total was daunting.
Newton’s response got off to a disappointing start with Colwill (2-19) striking in his first over, but Leighton Dayman (30) and Dave Church (17) steadied the ship with a mixture of patience and powerful strokes. Unfortunately for the visitors, both fell to Dom Durman (2-33) and the home side turned the screw. Matt Churchill picked up 2-23 and Will Coon took a hat-trick before claiming the final wicket of Tom Sunderland (14) to finish with 4-12.
