Newton St Cyres 202 all out beat South Brent 161 all out by 41 runs.
Newton St Cyres completed a double against league new boys South Brent lead by a stand out performance by all rounder Dave Church.
After being asked to bat first, Newton made steady progress with contributions from Leighton Dayman (28), Shenan Grossberg (22) and Martin Pearce (21), but at 95-5 they were in danger of not posting a significant target. However, Church (33) combined with Tom Sunderland (49) to put on 87 for the sixth wicket and put the home side in control. After these two fell the tail got the score over the 200 mark before Dave Lewis, South Brent’s stand out bowler took the last wicket to finish with 3-17.
In reply, Mick Howells hit a quickfire 18 to get the chase up and running before Lewis joined Chris Daniel. They took the score to 52 before Church dismissed Daniel (10) to claim the first of his six wickets. Lewis combined solid defence with some fine strokeplay but at the other end Newton were gradually chipping away with some good catches being taken. When Lewis was 5th man out for a fine 33 to the first ball after drinks it looked like the end was nigh, but some spirited hitting and some near misses allowed the batsmen to continue their fun. Matt Dardis (16) and Adam Cook (19) helped get the visitors to an unlikely 4th batting point before Andy Cork (2-26) dismissed the latter and confirm the victory.
