Five tries scored in comprehensive victory for Newton Stewart.

Newton Stewart RFC played close rivals from recent years Glasgow Accies RFC at Bladnoch Park last weekend. Fixtures between these two sides have ended in a draw more often than not and there is always a great competitive spirit between the two teams.
As the game kicked off the visitors were quickly penalised for holding on and Newton Stewart were awarded a kick at goal within range. Keen to take the early lead, Jack Gaw opening the score at 3-0.
Just two minutes later the Reds gained possession from the restart and scrum-half Robbie McCornick made a tremendous kick-over which centre Fraser Morton collected at pace to run in a thrilling first try for Newton Stewart under the posts. Jack Gaw converted the straightforward kick to make it 10 – 0 with less than five minutes played!
A spell of possession for Glasgow Accies followed with Newton Stewart forced to defend for the first time. Some good low tackles came in from the Reds against their larger opposition but Accies were awarded a penalty and lined up the kick at goal. The kick went wide and Newton Stewart were back in possession once more.
A scrum just inside the visitors’ half was the platform for the next score from Newton Stewart. The ball was thrown wide from the back of the scrum and there was some super incisive running from the men in Red. Second row Mark Craig hit a great line to cross the gainline, before full-back David Adams backed himself with the ball in hand to make some important yards. Fraser Morton then collected the ball almost behind his own back before passing it inside to hooker Thomas MacDonald who finished the excellent move under the posts. A misfire from Jack Gaw sent the conversion under the bar, 15-0.
Back row Jason McKie soon secured a line-out for Newton Stewart and a rolling maul was formed to rumble the ball forwards. Some determined and flowing play for Newton Stewart eventually saw young flanker Jamie Smith dive over the line, but he was held-up and the try not given.
Two scrums on the 5-metre line followed for Newton Stewart, but they came under pressure both times from Glasgow Accies, the Reds not able to get the ball away quickly enough. The second time Accies came away with the ball themselves and Reds’ scrum-half Robbie McCornick was given a yellow card for a dangerous tackle as the defence was scrambled.
Glasgow Accies had a prolonged spell of pressure now, trying to take advantage of their extra man. Winger Jamie Muir made two great tackles during this phase of the game, reading the play well and putting himself in the ideal place to thwart any danger. The Reds saw out the remainder of the first half unscathed and returned to the second half with their full complement of players.
Newton Stewart came out the blocks firing in the second half. Calum Gaw made a superb break, bursting a tackle and then making great yards before passing out to ‘velcro-hands’ Fraser Morton who gathered with his fingertips and ran in his second try. No conversion.
Jason McKie gathered the restart for the Reds and made a great break upfield, putting Newton Stewart back into their opponents’ half once more. Accies reclaimed possession and ran the ball back at Newton Stewart. They created an overlap and then used it quickly, throwing the ball wide to run in their only try of the match in the far corner. The difficult conversion kick went wide.
With Newton Stewart on the attack once more an unusual set of events unfolded. Accies intercepted a Reds pass and attempted to send the ball wide once more to counter, but their second pass was intercepted once again, this time by centre Calum Gaw, who tore over the line to score the bonus point try for Newton Stewart. Brother Jack converted this one for 24-5.
A spell of staunch defence followed for the Reds, with no way through for Accies.
Newton Stewart put on some exciting play to finish the match: a short line out throw by prop Ross Campbell was taken by Jason McKie, then immediately returned to Campbell. The prop galloped up the touchline before bouncing his tackler to the ground. He found replacement back row James Wallace on his inside shoulder and made the pass. Wallace charged up the pitch like the 8.15 from Barrhill, but found his pace was more freight train than sprinter! Mark McCornick was fortunately on his outside to take the final pass and score a last try to finish the game 34-5.
This was an excellent team performance from Newton Stewart RFC. With a few injuries suffered last weekend there were some changes of position to contend with in this match, but there appeared to be no weakness as a result.
Jason McKie’s work rate was exceptional once again and Jack Gaw had a fantastic game at stand-off, tackling hulks twice his size with ease. Ross Campbell impressed off the bench and David Adams grew in confidence at full-back as the game progressed.
Craig Wilson Ltd’s Man of the Match was Mark Craig. Often an unseen workhorse in the team, he dazzled with some excellent breaks with the ball in hand in this match, always fighting for the extra yard. An excellent performance.
