After a bright start for BBOB turning over 3 Olney scrums, it was Olney who were the first to put points on the board. A BBOB scrum was to be penalised, and a simple three points for Olney.
From the restart, BBOB immediately put pressure onto the Olney forwards, turning the ball over and setting up an attacking opportunity, leading to a five metre scrum to BB, on the Olney line. Warren Mackie picked up from 8 and a couple of forward carries followed, allowing quick ball to be released to the backs for Dan Bull to crash over the line from full-back for the first BB try.
Pressure from the forwards continued throughout the first half, with Jason Humphreys leading the way with turnovers across the park. A yellow card produced to Olneys’ captain allowed this pressure to increase, and lead to further tries from Matty Knowlton (2) who had a solid game on the wing.
Half time score – 25-3
The second half kicked off, with a number of changes to the BB side. Very early on the referee issued a yellow card to Jason Humphreys for repeated offences at the contact area, stemming the flow of the game. But the BB were resilient in keeping a clean sheet when down to 14 men, and when back up to the full compliment, the victory was assured.
Only one try was scored in the second half, with the on form Karl Chamberlain slicing through the Olney back line to score. Although this conversion was missed, the rampant fly half slotted 13 points with the boot, securing BB a comfortable win.
Final score – 33-3
“Forwards win the ball, backs win the game” – personified in an enjoyable game of rugby.
BBOB 2nds go to Bedford Athletic for a ‘friendly’ next week.
