Back to winning ways

Mens Own started 2020 with an away journey to Deepings. With injuries from before Christmas still looming and a few unavailable for various reasons own traveled with a very changed side to the start of the season.

Own started off well and showed their dominance around the park with big carries and tackles from the off and it didn't take long for the first Try to go over the home sides line. 11 minutes in a break from Louis James through the center of the park created a massive break in play, with the ball recycled well, it moved down the line to find Conor Frost out wide to smash his way over the line and score in the corner. Con Missed 0-5.

Own continued to work hard around the park and it payed off, the home side ran hard and with plenty of numbers but the Own defensive line wouldn't let up. The next try came after a very strong scrum on the far side of the pitch. A carry in the middle of the park from Thatcher and Rust set up good platform for the ball to be shipped to Louis James to gruba kick through the Deepings back line, Cairns was on hand to chase and gathered well over the Deepings line. Converted James 0-12.

Own started to open up their stride and the well worked phases started to come into play. Deepings gave away a penalty on the half way line with James set to kick to touch he spotted a miss match on the far side. A quick tap and go and a wide pass to Rust the Deepings back line were split, Rust found Thatcher on a deep hard run and Thatcher went on a stepping spree. Darting in and out of the covering players Thatcher went over the Try line untouched for a Try of the season contender. Converted James 0-19.

It only took a few minutes for the next try to come. Own continued to push Deepings back and continued to play their patterns. Jones who Captained the side ran a hard line and smashed through the defensive line sliding under the posts for his first of the day. Converted James
0-26.

*Half Time*

Own came out looking to add to the points in the second half and it only took 2 minutes until the 5th try went over. Louis James saw half a gap and stepped his way through darting and weaving between players James managed to step through 5 defenders and dive over the line. Con missed 0-31.

With the flood gates open and the home side struggling with Owns line breaks, a scattered defense gave room for Sonny Bill Bagby to show his foot work and get through the line. Bagby showed that it was not only backs that could step and offload it was also Props... Bagby managed a 30 meter run before the big man was brought down, with good hands he managed to off load to the hard running Gut Ray to dive over in the corner. Converted James 0-38.

The Trys continued to come when Deepings gave away another penalty in the Own half, Sandham got his hands on the ball and went for the quick tap, with a scrambled defense Sandham managed to get through the defensive line with a couple of players to beat Toby got the ball away to Rust to charge over the line and the rest of the defenders. Converted James 0-45.

It was the home sides time to get on the score sheet with some good attacking play from the home side, constant pressure from Deepings left a gap around the fringes and the home side slid over for their only Try of the game. Con Missed 5-45.

Own came back with a response to the Try and more hard lines from Bagby and Hill were causing trouble for the home side. With the play going one way a quick reverse across the pitch gave space for Rust to go through the defensive line and under the sticks for his second of the match. Converted James 5-52.

With Deepings down to 14 Men, Own opened their stride once again with Jones dominating round the park it was only a matter of time until he got his second of the day. With a repeat of his first Try the backs and forwards linked well into the Deepings half, with the platform set Jones ran another hard line on the outside going through the defensive line untouched with just the Fullback to beat Jones showed his footwork stepping back on the inside leaving the fullback running the wrong way giving him time to dot under the sticks. Converted James 5-59.

With the final whistle approaching Own kept the intensity all the way through. Deepings gave away another penalty for entering the ruck at the side. Own set up their platform from the penalty and ran it well. with 2 phases linking nicely and a quick reverse play Jones found himself in the same position he was moments before, another charging hard line left Jones untouched as he went between 2 defenders, with nobody to chase the baby Rhino down he glided under the posts to dot down for his 3rd of the match. Converted James 5-66.

Full time.
