This turned out to be as good a game as you could get at this level and Scouts were hit hard by the accurate boot of Wellingborough’s fly half Pete Vickers.
Vickers has returned to the club to help get them out of the relegation zone and was the difference between the two sides as showed his ability with a 24 point haul.
Scouts kicked off on a sunny day and the ball bounced awkwardly for the visitors defence but Scouts failed to capitalise.
Wellingborough then began to force the game and Vickers slotted the first of his five penalties and then converted from the touchline when his left winger had raced away from Scouts covering defence.
The home side were also in an attacking mood and were rewarded for their enterprise with a try from skipper Russell Lynch which was converted by Adam Frost. ‘Boro soon responded with a penalty before Scouts brought the game to within a point when Ben Crossland dotted down after some inter-passing and change of attack from scum half Matt Brown.
After the frenetic first quarter the scoring slowed down before the break although another penalty and conversion of a try, after a turnover, by Vickers gave the visitors a 23 – 12 lead.
The second half was barely three minutes old when a break from their own 22 resulted in a sublime chip inside, with the outside of his boot, by that man Vickers and seven more points were added.
Penalties four and five stretched the lead further but Scouts had not given up hope and scored a well worked try of their own from close range by Cameron Hauxwell which Frost converted.
With over twenty minutes remaining and both sides having scored three tries it was likely that they could both get bonus points but a combination of tired legs and desperate defending did not allow either to do so.
The final say came from Vickers as he rounded off the game with a last minute drop goal.
