Super Seconds lose at home but can hold their heads up after a spirited performance.

Saturday the 27 of September saw the Old Scouts Super Seconds facing up to Olney Seconds in an emotional encounter. The weather was unusually warm for the time of year and the pitch was rock hard making conditions ideal for the spectators but tough on the players.

Scouts fielded a team with a good mix of youth and experience and after a minutes silence in honour of Luis Ghaut the Seconds received the KO. Scouts found themselves defending for the first 10 minutes but did so manfully and thwarted each of the Olney attacks. Then after Steve Hayes disrupted and Olney throw in to a line-out just inside the Scouts 22 Bobby Bland poached the ball and ran the length of the pitch to score, the try was converted and the Scouts had a seven point lead.

The visitors soon struck back however and it was not long before the scores were level again. The home team soon thought they had another when Wes Munya crossed the white wash only to have the try disallowed the ref ruling the final pass forward. Not to be denied however the home team soon went on the attack again and Jack Turner playing at centre put the Scouts back in the lead. 12 7.

Again the visitors replied quickly levelling the scores then just before half time they scored again giving the visitors a half time lead 12 19.

As the second half commenced Scouts had taken a clear ascendancy up front and where very strong in the scrums. Unfortunately they could not convert this dominance into points and several attacks broke down as a result of a wayward pass and some slippery hands.

Then for a brief moment the home team's defence slipped and the visitors scored two quick try's converting one. Despite huge effort on both attack and defence Scouts were unable to score again. At no point did the boys from Rushmere Rd drop their heads and a played with pride and passion right to the end. The result may have gone against the Super Seconds 12 31 but the boys could walk off with their heads held high. Some work to do before next weeks first merit table encounter but if the the Seconds continue to play with this level of intensity and just up the level on passing precession and some of their first time tackles they will be a formidable force.
