U12s @ Wellingborough 22/9/13

The U12s started the season with the traditional curtain raiser v Wellingborough. The teams played 4 closely fought matches with 3 ending in draws and Wellingborough gaining the upper hand in the opening match.

The already small squad was dealt a further blow before kick off when Sam was taken ill and could only play a small part throughout the 4 matches.

Wellingborough won the first match 2-0 mainly through Scouts switching off and falling off their tackles early on. However they showed good defensive work otherwise which was to be continued in the rest of the matches.

Of the remaining matches, 2 ended in 0-0 stalemates with both sides unable to break down determined defence. The highlight came in the 3rd match with Lucas scoring a superb solo try following a steal of the hosts’ lineout ball near to the Scouts try line and defence swiftly being turned to attack. Scouts thought they’d won the game when Lawrenze scored, only to be pulled back for an earlier hand-off.

During the matches the forwards put in an excellent shift and worked as a cohesive unit in the loose and began to get the upper hand in the scrums as well despite having a size disadvantage compared to their larger counterparts.

The tenacious driving and tackling by Scouts left its mark with numerous opposition players in need of attention or having to leave the pitch. Overall a good and encouraging start to the season.

Finally a huge well done and welcome to Sophie who after only 1 training session was thrown straight in at the deep end played a vital part in the matches showing immense promise and potential.
