More about North Bristol Colts rugby!

What is Colts?

Colts rugby is the name given to rugby for under 17 and 18 players. For the first time the U17’s players go into a mixed squad which involves joining the age group above them. When they become the U18s they are the older players and join with the age below them. Developing an ability to mix with others is not just useful when players move into adult rugby but is also a valuable life skill for every area of life!
With two year groups will all of the players be needed?
Yes! Despite having two age groups it is a time of their life when these aged players have many things going on in their lives. With commitments such as education, part time jobs etc it’s a case of the more players the better to ensure a full match day squad. Everyone will get regular rugby.

Are all standards of player needed?

Absolutely! Throughout the years leading up to Colts, teams will have experienced players developing at different speeds. A player who may struggle one year can develop into a strong player another year. Our ethos is focused on player development rather than winning as many matches as we can. All players will get an equal opportunity irrespective of their ability. In return for their commitment and effort we undertake to do our best to develop them into the best player they can be. Every player is valued and there is a place for any player within our squad.

I’m not sure if Colts are for me. What should I do?

Come to pre-season and give it a go! U16’s going into Colts can find it daunting. They may be going to 6th form or college and this is another upheaval. Pre-season is a chance to get involved with the Colts without needing to re-join the club. As in younger years we are more interested in ensuring our team is right for the player than collecting subs. We recommend that all players give Colts a go!

What about matches?

We recognise that some players will be at a different level to others and all will want competitive rugby. We will play GRFU Colts Development league matches and friendlies. The league matches are against the teams entered into our league, which is for mixed squads of U17 and U18 players for clubs in South Gloucestershire and Bristol, so clubs you'll be familiar with. The friendly matches we choose and we will endeavour to arrange games with opponents who will challenge us and enable us to develop all of our players. The idea is that players who do not play in a league match for example would be the first on the team sheet for the friendly match. Everyone will get plenty of rugby and it will be at a level which is appropriate for them.

Training details

Colts train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Whilst it is desirable for players to come to both sessions it is not compulsory. We will discuss this as a squad during pre-season and would not want anyone to leave the squad just because they are not available for all the sessions.

Coaches

Two squads coming together means two sets of coaches. As with players we aim to give everyone a role! On top of that the Colts will benefit from coaching from the senior’s coaches at many sessions. The Colts will start the season training alone but as the season progresses they will do non-contact sessions with the seniors. This will be introduced gradually and has been enjoyed in the past so players new to the Colts should not let it put them off!

When does training start?

This year pre-season training starts Tuesday 2nd July at 7pm

Questions?

If you have questions please speak to one of the coaches. If in doubt give it a go and see how you get on!
