U13s win against Kingswood
Win in very difficult conditions
This week, our opponents were Kingswoood on very wet and boggy pitch after the recent rain and snow. These conditions made it very difficult to handle the ball with accuracy and it became very apparent that this was a forwards game.
It was a very messy start to the game, the slippy ball making it difficult to pass it around. Ben T started the game well with some tackles and a long run past a few attempted tackles; but Bobby was able to open the scoring, running more than half the pitch to score after a pass from Will. Kingsood quickly leveled from lovely fluent moves. Roo made some good tackles but could not stop Kingswood who eventually were able to take the lead. We were not playing to our best ability and this was a slow start to the game. We were close to leveling a couple of times but were down 2-1 after the first quarter.
The 2nd quarter started better for us with, Fletcher making a strong drive, enabling Cobey to make a run into the corner before offloading to Ellis who scored. Matthew then made a fast run after some loose play to make it 3-2. We were now putting Kingswood under a lot of pressure and from a penalty Leon passed the ball to Fletcher to allow him to score from close range. Ben B made a lovely pass to Chris who burst down the wing to score, soon after Matthew caught the ball from a Kingswood kick and ran straight through their defence, putting the ball over the line. Half time we were up 6-2.
Kingswood came back on the pitch for the 3rd quarter, catching us off guard and scored early. It would have been another early try for Kingswood had Max not made a brilliant tackle to stop them scoring again. George P and George V were starting to find their passing range and good team work enabled Bobby to get the ball out to Morgan who sprinted down the wing to score. Soon after the same combination work allowed Morgan to use his speed to score again. Unfortunately, despite good team play for us, Kingswood scored again ending the quarter 8-4.
The final quarter started with Archie making a good run into the Kingswood half passing the ball out to Matthew who was able to score, Ellis then put Fletcher in so he could score his 2nd. Chris was also to get his scoring tally up, getting his 2nd try of the game after another burst down the wing. Our scoring was not finished yet as Leon picked up the ball from the back of the scrum and weaved his way through a couple of tackles to make it 12-4. We kept pushing and probing against a tiring Kingswood side who had also picked up a few injuries.
Try of the game came from a lovely grubber kick completed by Ben B through the defence allowing Ollie to race through and tap down the ball. The scoring was completed after Leon passed to Ollie who scored again. Final score 14-4.
A hard fought win in difficult conditions, well done boys. Also, well done to Jack and Evan who came to support the boys even though they were not able to play themselves.
Tries - Bobby, Ellis, Matthew(3), Fletcher(2), Chris(2), Morgan(2), Leon, Ollie(2)
