U13s Massive victory against Thornbury
By Steve Wyres
North Bristol go on rampage in an amazing performance
Today was local derby day against Thornbury on a windy but sunny morning, the boys were up for this and raring to go. Thornbury were joined by players from St Marys and played as a mixed side.
Thornbury started the game fantastically, keeping the ball brilliantly and driving us back. They were getting close to our try line until Tom (first time back at Thornbury since leaving in the summer) put in a thunderous tackle, which not only won us the ball back, but changed the tone of the game. From that point on we were on top, thanks to some fabulous passing by Ben B and a strong run by Diego driving us into the Thornbury 22 we kept probing at their defence until the ball was passed down the line allowing Devan to offload to Morgan, who sped down the wing scoring our opening try in the corner.
Thornbury tried to come back at us, but the team were putting in some big tackles, especially from Diego and Cobey on the wing. From a scrum in the Thornbury 22, the forwards won the ball against the head enabling Leon to get the ball out to Devan who scored our second. 2-0 up at the end of the 1st quarter.
We dominated the 2nd quarter. Matthew notably driving hard at the Thornbury defence, getting the ball to George V who made a lovely offload to George P, who then made a brilliant pass to Tom who ran round the defence to score. Curtis and Max were putting in lots well directed tackles and the team were working really hard in the rucks, which allowed Matthew to pick up the ball and run straight through many tackles to score. Matthew (who did not seem to stop running all day) drove into the Thornbury forwards before passing to Cullen, who perfectly offloaded to Tom who powerfully ran straight through the defence for his 2nd. Soon enough, George V passed to Matthew who was so powerful that he scored after pushing back 3 players 10 meters. Roo and Chris made some extremely good runs and worked really hard defensively stopping Thornbury getting any momentum.
The whole team played some amazing rugby today and the passing was so accurate. George P offloaded to Will who used his strength to drive through the defence for another try. James almost scored his opening try for the club but despite a brilliant run down the wing, he was unfortunately stopped just before the try line. Louie, who seemed really fired up today, put in some great tackles keeping Thornbury pegged back in their half before Will offloaded to Bobby who finished off the half by scoring in the corner.
8-0 at half time and even when winning by so many the boys did not stop giving 100%, they continued putting in a massive effort and not gave Thornbury an inch. Ellis managed to pinch the ball back in the 22 and offloaded to Jack who showed his aggression, driving through to score. Ellis was then able to score himself after a strong drive and Morgan scored after another run down the wing. Gene worked hard at full back despite having a slight injury, stopping any attacks at full back and making some good runs himself.
The final quarter started with some excellent runs and tackles from both James and Evan. To Thornbury's credit they kept trying to score but fantastic tackles from Fletcher and Cullen stopped them. Evan was able to win the ball back and allowed Will to pass the ball to Captain Bobby who sprinted nearly the length of the pitch to score, leaving the Thornbury players unable to catch him.
Matthew managed to score his 3rd try of the day after great pressure from Louie who was able to turn the ball over. A very clever kick from George P from the restart, enabled Louie to retrieve the ball and drive through to score the final try of the day.
Final score 14-0 (70-0). An amazing and magnificent performance from every single player in the squad; not only scoring so many tries but for the first time this season stopping the opposition from scoring. Great work from all the players and also the coaches who showed what great coaching can produce.
