Visitors Gordano ‘snow’ match as North sparkle in sunny winter wonderland
Bright winter sunshine on snow covered 4G pitch makes for vivid spectacle as North slip and slide to victory
Trojan efforts by coach Andy and his helpers in clearing tramlines in the snow enabled this match to go ahead when less brave souls would have stayed huddled under their duvets. Indeed, this match was originally scheduled as a visit to Gordano, but the recent snow forced the change of venue.
Not to be deterred the brave North lads lined out to take on the visitors with James and Luke returning from injury and new team mate, Joe Mead making his debut. In total, North had a squad of 26 on the day, not including Tom Bullock who, although present, was unavailable for selection due to the head injury incurred last time out.
Alfie kicked off away from the Meadows end, with the bright sunshine reflecting strongly off the snow. The lack of undersoil heating meant 5-7cm of snow carpeted the pitch with only white / green lines visible and this made slick handling and passing very difficult. However North carved out 5 tries while only conceding one, and some of the passing moves were excellent.
It took ten minutes for the first North try to arrive from a North scrum near the right touchline on halfway; the robust North pack provided scrum-half Alfie with a secure platform and his pass found James who made some ground before releasing Tom Bennett on the forty; Tom showed great acceleration to slice through the Gordano defence to touch down in the left corner.
Ten minutes later, the powerful North forwards set up a ruck, from where the backs passed the ball through the hands to Mack, who sped over to touch down under the posts; 10-0 to North which was how the half finished.
Five minutes into the second half, Jacob crashed over for North’s third try after more sterling work by his fellow forwards. Then on 21 minutes, Tom Bennett added his second try of the day, following a darting break by Mack down the left touchline, to leave North leading 20-0.
Four minutes later, Finn danced his way through the visitor’s defence to score under the posts, leaving Alfie the easiest of conversions which he duly converted. Brave Gordano, who never stopped battling throughout, got over for a consolation score on the final whistle to leave the final result 27-5 to North.
This was an enjoyable, competitive match, played in a sporting manner in very difficult handling conditions, with ice and snow accumulating on the match ball, leaving it almost impossible to hold onto in the tackle. This resulted in numerous scrums for knock-ons which gave the North forwards some good scrummaging practice.
Thank you and well done to the North players who guested for Gordano; these included Matt, Jensen, Ed and Jamie
