Strong overall team performance sees North earn commanding victory
Busy Joe Bees’ hat-trick stings home defence to pave way for away win
As the promising bright sunny Sunday morning turned into a dull, grey day, this competitive encounter away to Yatton lifted the spirits of the spectators as North put in a strong team performance to overcome the spirited home side.
The final scoreline is harsh on the North Somerset side, who battled bravely, but lacked the clinical cutting edge that saw North make far fewer mistakes, as well as the slickness of passing that enabled the visitors to run in nine tries, three by outside centre, Joe Bees who was a hive of activity throughout.
James kicked off towards the road end to start the match and North were immediately in control, taking less than two minutes for Max to crash over under the posts; James’ conversion put North 7-0 up. Finn used his power to add a second try on seven minutes and eight minutes later, Lucki ran in from 30m out for the third, neither of the latter two being converted, leaving the score 17-0 to North.
Will gathered the ensuing restart inside his own 10m line, and immediately charged forward, supported by his pack; a combination of strength and slick passing through several forwards’ hands saw Joe Bees buzz over for his first try of the day to put North 22-0 ahead.
Two minutes later, George crossed over on the right; this time Alfie was unsuccessful with his kick, but North now led by 27-0. Despite trailing by such a margin, Yatton were still competing fiercely and just before half-time, Ed, guesting for the home side, weaved his way over under the posts for a seven pointer to leave the half-time score 27-7 to North.
Five minutes into the second half, Joe Bees flew in under the posts for his second try, leaving James the easiest of drop kick conversions. Five minutes later, Lucki sacked the Yatton left winger near half way to set up North possession; a sly pass out to Jacob on the right touchline allowed the number 5 to canter over in the corner. James’ conversion looked good but his valiant attempt was to be denied by the thickness of a coat of paint as the ball rebounded off the upward bowed crossbar. North now however led 39-7.
Nine minutes later, with Dougie and Lucki now in their ranks, Yatton pulled an unconverted try back to leave the score 39-12. North responded quickly and a slick pass by James to Joe Bees, running hard at his shoulder, saw Joe cross for his hat-trick, leaving another easy conversion; 46-12 to North. On the stroke of full time, Mike powered over for a deserved try on the left, but the crooked woodwork again denied James' conversion attempt to leave the final score 51-12 to North.
The margin of victory belies the fact that this was a well contested contest, with the home side perhaps lacking the depth of panel available to North. North’s pack was far more powerful and the passing through the hands much quicker and slicker. Yatton were constantly pressurised into errors which meant that they struggled to escape from their own half for long periods, despite being supported by North guests Ed, Matt, Lucki, Will and Dougie. Special thanks to those guys for this sporting generosity and thanks to Yatton, who, as always, were the most generous and friendly of hosts..
