Cockfosters deservedly won this Spartan South Midlands League Dudley Lathan Memorial (Premier Division) Cup Second Round tie courtesy of two first half goals, the second coming some six minutes before the break.
Greenford’s best spell in this contest came in the opening exchanges when it needed an excellent save by Cockfosters keeper Adam Seymour to keep out an Aaron McLeish goal-bound strike early on, and saw the Blues winning several corners as they put pressure on the home defence.
It was actually against the run of play when Cockfosters broke the deadlock on 20 minutes after a counter-attack down the right which looked suspiciously offside was clinically finished by right midfielder Yacine Aiba.
Not surprisingly from that point the home side began to play with greater confidence and, despite United creating a number of chances to level the score, a defensive error led to Cockfosters scoring the crucial second goal on 39 minutes when, after Lewis Todd had pulled off a great save to keep out an initial strike on goal, the ball came out to Rian Carroll who placed an unstoppable strike into the corner which gave the Blues keeper no chance.
No further goals were to be added in the second period, during what was for the most part a scrappy, forgettable half of football with both defences firmly in control excellently supported by the two keepers, who comfortably dealt with any threats on their respective goals.
After the team’s fine win on Saturday at Stotfold this was another frustrating and disappointing display by North Greenford who will be looking for a much improved performance when they travel across London on Saturday to face Dagenham-based Eastern Counties Division One side May & Bakers FC in the Buildbase FA Vase First Round Proper.
