Match report

Dunstable Town  4    North Greenford United  1
(Saturday 25th January 2014)
In a match in which the weather played a major part, North Greenford were well beaten by league leaders Dunstable Town eventually losing the game by four goals to one.
Throughout the first half a strong gusting wind made it almost impossible for either side to play controlled passing football.  The Duns came close to opening the scoring on six minutes when a Bernard Christie effort struck the crossbar but there were few further occasions when either keeper was seriously tested as both sides struggled to cope with the conditions.
The contest came to life as half-time approached.  First a deflected shot from Greenford’s Bradley Morris struck the Dunstable post.  Then, at the end of virtually the next attacking move of the game, Duns striker Lee Roache dribbled his way into the United area before firing a shot past Lee Pearce into the far corner.
The weather conditions changed dramatically at the start of the second period.  Within minutes of the resumption a torrential hail and thunderstorm forced referee Rob Smith to lead the players off the pitch.
The storm subsided and after a ten minute break Mr Smith was able to re-start the game.  The wind had died down but the pitch was now carrying a good deal of surface water
Greenford were the first to benefit when, after fifty-four minutes, the Duns defence failed to deal with a low David Taylor cross into their penalty area. The ball fell to United substitute Wayne Jackson who was able to level the score with a well-placed shot past keeper Robin Head.
It wasn’t long though before Dunstable regained their lead.  Given a second chance, after his initial shot had been blocked, Roche fired through a crowded area to notch up his second of the game.
Some outstanding goalkeeping from Lee Pearce, making several top-drawer saves to prevent the Duns extending their lead, kept Greenford in the game right up to the eighty-fifty minute.
From that point, two late goals secured what in the end was a comfortable victory for the league leaders.  Both were the result of defensive errors.
First Roache’s strike partner Terry Dixon was able to drive a shot past Pearce after United had failed to clear their lines despite gaining possession inside their penalty area.
Then, on the stroke of full-time, Greenford lost the ball in midfield allowing the Duns to mount a swift counter-attack down the right.  The ball was crossed to Roache who was able to complete his hat-trick with the simplest of finishes.
NGU Team: Lee Pearce, Danny McDonnell, Dan Carter, Danny Bennell (capt), Carlton Stewart, Michael Dart (Wayne Jackson 45), Daniel Vincent (Omar Vassell 70), David Taylor, Bradley Morris, Louis Stead, Anton Robinson (Aaron Silcott 80)
