Match report

Leighton Town  1    North Greenford United  1
(Tuesday 28th October 2014)

A hard-working and spirited defensive performance, with keeper Melvin Minter outstanding in the United goal, earned North Greenford their second draw in four days against an in-form Leighton Town side.

The game began at a fast tempo with both teams looking for an early breakthrough.  Leighton looked dangerous on the counter-attack, moving the ball quickly to their lively front runners, but Minter, quick off his line and using his height to very good effect, denied the Reds several promising goal-scoring opportunities.

Greenford’s best chance to break the deadlock came on eighteen minutes when good play from new signing Adam Wallace out on the right found Jack Hutchinson in space inside the home penalty area, but the Blues midfielder’s effort was blocked.

Around this time United also won a number of corners in quick succession but, as on Saturday at AFC Hayes, the delivery was disappointing and the Leighton defence were able to comfortably clear their lines.

On the stroke of half-time, just when it seemed inevitable that the opening period would end in stalemate, Greenford were awarded a free-kick on the left just outside the Leighton area.

Anticipating a delivery into the middle of his box, Reds keeper Dan Green was wrong-footed by a fierce Hutchinson drive to his near post and, though he adjusted and got a hand to the ball, was unable to prevent the shot finding the back of his net.

Predictably Leighton began the second period determined to quickly get themselves back on level terms and ten minutes into the half did just that.  A fine Phil Draycott delivery from the left was met by striker Michael Lyon and, on this occasion, even Minter could not prevent Lyon’s close-range header finding its target.

From this point, with both sides pressing for a winner, the pattern of play replicated that of the first period, although both sides were guilty of over-hitting passes and giving the ball away too cheaply.

However when the Reds broke they still looked dangerous, stretching the Blues defenders – Andrew Manitou, Gavin Austin and Chinua Cole – who worked hard to win the ball, and were once again brilliantly supported by Minter, who continued to pull off some fine saves to keep United in the game.

As in the first period Greenford’s best chances came from set pieces but they were again let down by poor deliveries.  The team’s only strike on goal was an effort from substitute Jack Read five minutes from time which drifted wide of the post.

Leighton pressed hard for a late winner, earning three corners in quick succession, but Greenford defended these well and held out for another much-needed point.
