Match report

Daventry Town  2    North Greenford United  1
(Saturday 15th November 2014)

On a damp Saturday afternoon at Communications Park North Greenford, despite producing a hard-working, spirited performance, lost narrowly to a Daventry Town side themselves looking for their first win after suffering three defeats in a row under the club’s new managerial team of Allan Smart and Ady Fuller.

The game began at a frenetic pace with both sides struggling to cope with the slippery conditions but, with both clearly aware of the significance of this particular fixture, there was a strong competitive edge to the contest from the outset.

Daventry striker Howard Forinton came close to opening the scoring for the home side when his fierce strike on fifteen minutes narrowly missed the target.  United’s best early chance fell to Jack Hutchinson but his attempt to chip Ben Heath was easily dealt with by the Town keeper.

On twenty minutes Daventry midfielder Aaron Parkinson saw a fine long-range effort well saved by Greenford keeper Melvin Minter, who got a strong hand to the ball to tip it over his crossbar.

In the end the first half remained goalless despite three good chances for Daventry falling to Forinton’s strike partner Tommy Berwick, and two falling to United striker Jack Read, the second of which, four minutes before the break, brought out a fine save from Heath.

Greenford began the second half brightly with Hutchinson and David Manu making promising runs in their attempts to break down the Daventry defence.  Several free-kicks were won in dangerous positions but the deliveries from these were disappointing and easily cleared by the home side.  As the contest approached the hour mark Hutchinson fired a shot just past the Town post.

Five minutes later Daventry finally broke the deadlock after themselves winning a free-kick out on the right.  A well-worked Town set piece saw a low Ashley Deeney cross met by substitute Jack Howard at the near post.  Howard found the back of the visitors’ net with an accurate strike that gave Minter no chance.

United responded well after going behind and within eight minutes had levelled the score.  On this occasion Hutchinson produced a perfect set piece delivery which was met by Read whose powerful header easily beat Heath.

With twelve minutes of normal time remaining Daventry scored what was to prove the match-winning goal.  Played in by an excellent pass by Josh Blake, Berwick finally got on the score sheet with a thunderous drive that, despite their efforts to block the shot, the Blues defence was unable to keep out.

To their credit the Greenford players continued to press for an equaliser right up to the final whistle, with Read coming agonisingly close to doing just that on the end of a low cross from substitute Gavin Suddell.  In the end they could count themselves extremely unfortunate not to have come away from Daventry with a share of the spoils.
