Match report

Hanworth Villa  1    North Greenford United  1
(FA Cup Preliminary Round - Saturday 30th August 2014)

In an entertaining and closely contested cup tie at Rectory Meadow on Saturday Hanworth Villa and North Greenford scored a goal apiece in the second half to earn a replay at Berkeley Fields on Tuesday evening.

During a frenetic start to the contest Greenford came closest to opening the scoring when, on seven minutes, new signing Javonne Molloy struck the Villains crossbar as he attempted to turn in an excellent Anthony O’Connor cross from the right.

Although retaining a high tempo the game settled into a pattern, with United enjoying the better of the possession but Villa always looking a potential threat on the counter attack. The visitors though were unable to convert their possession into goals.

They had opportunities to do so.  Midway through the half Greenford midfielder George Moore produced two strikes on target in quick succession which were well saved by Villains keeper Dave Buss, and further chances fell to fellow midfielder Karl Brown.

Then, as the game approached half-time, a strong United penalty appeal was turned down by referee Mark Stevens when Moore’s run into the area was cynically blocked by a Villa defender.

Within ten minutes of the resumption United finally broke the deadlock, Brown getting to the by-line on the end of a fine Greenford move and laying the ball back to Molloy whose strike found the back of the home net giving Buss no chance.

Ironically, the goal served more to inspire Villa to raise their game than to help the Greenford players settle their nerves, take control of the game and consolidate their advantage.  Passes began to go astray and, whenever they had the opportunity, Hanworth launched the ball and exploited the side’s counter-attacking potential.

Just after the game had passed the hour mark United’s keeper Liam Watson was called into action, producing three quality saves in quick succession to prevent goal-bound efforts from Jack Todd and the Villa strikers levelling the score for the home side.

From this point, despite being continually stretched at the back, Greenford protected their slender lead until, with a little over ten minutes of normal time remaining, Hanworth finally scored the equaliser their efforts had deserved.

Another long ball out to the right was played in to full-back Matt Baines who had made a fine, well-timed run into the box, and was able to place the ball past Watson from close range.

The goal guaranteed a thrilling finale as both teams went all out to grab the winner, and had chances to do so.  The best of these fell to Greenford’s captain Louis Stead, whose shot three minutes from time, on the end of a fine individual run, was well saved by Buss, and whose effort when through on goal deep into stoppage time narrowly missed the target.

It wasn’t to be for either side, and both sets of players now have to get themselves ready to do it all again on Tuesday evening.
