Match report

Following Saturday’s disappointing home defeat to Farnham Town North Greenford put on an improved display against fellow strugglers Bedfont & Feltham on Tuesday evening but, despite having the best chances to win the contest, had to settle for a share of the spoils.  As a result both clubs remain rooted at the foot of the CCPL table urgently looking for the league win that will hopefully turn their fortunes around.

During a lively ten minute spell at the start of the game United twice came close to breaking the deadlock, first through a shot from right midfielder Alfie Cain which narrowly missed the target, and then from an effort on eight minutes from player-manager Ricky Pither that struck the visitors woodwork.

Unfortunately, immediately after Pither had come so agonisingly close to scoring for Greenford, Bedfont & Feltham mounted a counter-attack that ended with striker Jacob Lambe firing in a fierce low strike from the left that keeper Lewis Todd, playing his first game for the Blues this season, did well to get a hand to.  Lambe’s strike partner Laurie Diakiesse was first to the loose ball and drove it past Todd into the back of the home net.

From this point the contest remained fairly even until the end of the half with both sides having good, if limited, opportunities to add to the scoreline.  On 22 minutes Cain came even closer to opening his account with another excellent shot that struck the visitors’ crossbar.  At the other end a fine effort from Bedfont & Feltham captain Jim Ward fizzed past the United post and a goal-bound Lambe strike was brilliantly saved by Todd.

With half-time approaching United had further chances to level the score when Jamal Velinor came close to getting his head to a Sandro Costa delivery and Pither to getting his foot to a low George Moore cross from the right.

With Greenford beginning the second period brightly the team did not have to wait long before finally claiming a deserved equaliser.  On the end of an accurate Costa ball played out to the right, Pither was able to get behind the Bedfont & Feltham defence and he produced a composed finish, placing the ball past keeper Triston Thomas into the corner of the visitors’ net.

From a similar position on the hour, Pither produced a firmly struck controlled volley, but on this occasion Thomas pulled off an outstanding save to prevent United taking the lead.  Eight minutes later the Blues again came agonisingly close to going ahead when Costa was played in following a neat Velinor through pass but dragged his shot inches past the wrong side of Thomas’ post.

Greenford continued to dominate play and press for the winner until the final whistle but, despite winning several corners and free-kicks in dangerous positions, in the end could not find the quality to break down the Bedfont & Feltham resistance and finally secure the team’s first home league win, and three desperately needed points.
