Match report

Following the club’s impressive home performances against Horley Town and runaway CCL Premier Division leaders Hartley Wintney, North Greenford’s midweek away defeat by Chertsey Town was extremely disappointing.

This was despite the fact that the unavailability of several key players meant that Danny and Colin were forced to field a weakened team, with just two substitutes on the bench, one of whom was the club’s new Portuguese signing Helio Sardinha.

Greenford actually began the game well.  Following the lively opening exchanges United took an early lead on seven minutes when Jamal Velinor played an excellent cross-field ball to Charlie Conner that opened up the home defence on the left.  Conner drove towards goal before beating the advancing Curfews keeper Chico Ramos with a cleverly executed chip.

The lead did not last long.  Eight minutes later the Greenford defence were only able to partially clear a blocked high shot from the edge of their area.  The loose ball fell to Joel Thompson who drove the ball through a crowd of players into the bottom corner.

From that point Chertsey began to dominate play as United struggled to keep possession. The home side went ahead on 25 minutes when Tommy Batten was allowed a free header from a corner.  The Curfews midfielder made no mistake, placing the ball in the roof of the Greenford net, giving keeper Lewis Todd no chance.

Apart from a long range effort on 40 minutes from Greenford captain Anthony Rowlands which whistled past the Chertsey post, further strikes on goal were few and far between at either end.

Early in the second period United substitute Alfie Cain, on to replace Kamal Akel, fired a free-kick over the home crossbar as the visitors tried to get themselves back into the game.

They did just that on the hour after winning another free-kick in a dangerous position out on the right. Daniel Vincent’s well-flighted delivery was met by Anthony O’Connor whose angled header beat Ramos’s outstretched arm before nestling in the back of the home net.

However, in virtually the next move of the contest the Curfews lively and dangerous forward Shelton Gooden made a strong run through the Greenford defence, a run he ended with an unstoppable strike past Todd into the corner, to round off a magnificent solo effort.

Despite further United efforts to once again level the score Chertsey, determined to protect their narrow advantage, defended well to ensure they frustrated their opponents attempts on goal.

Then, three minutes into stoppage time Chertsey made certain of what, in the end, was a comfortable and well-deserved victory, when their long-serving striker John Pomroy,  with nearly 450 appearances and over 300 goals to his name, converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Shelton by Josh Lewis-Evans.

NGU Team: Lewis Todd, Anthony Rowlands (captain), Ryan Murphy, Kamal Akel (Alfie Cain 45), Josh Lewis-Evans, Matt Travis, Carl Bower, Daniel Vincent, Anthony O’Connor, Jamal Velinor (Helio Sardinha 80), Charlie Conner
