Match report

North Greenford’s last remaining involvement in a cup competition this season was short-lived when they were beaten at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium by Spartan Division One side Enfield Borough by three goals to one in Round Two of the MFA Senior Charity Cup.

As was the case in the club’s early exit back in October from the other County Competition, the Senior Challenge Cup, when they lost to local rivals Uxbridge, the Blues were the better of the two sides, particularly in the first half but were unable to finish the numerous chances they created.  Enfield Borough, on the other hand, made the most of theirs and deservedly won the tie to earn their place in the next round.

After Enfield had begun the contest brightly, United settled and began to move the ball well from the back and through midfield.  Chances were created, too many to mention, but a combination of indifferent finishing and resilient defensive play by the Borough back four and keeper Elgi Ferjo prevented Greenford opening the scoring.

Then on the half hour, and against the run of play, a poorly defended Enfield corner enabled the home side to break the deadlock when unmarked centre-back Guy Klangebeni was able to place the ball in the back of the United net past Blues keeper Bailey Mulhall.

Enfield began the second period confidently and, early in the half, were able to extend their lead when substitute Solomon Nwabuokei made the most of being given a clear sight of goal, firing in an unstoppable strike into the roof of the visitors net.

Greenford rallied and on the hour, just after Jordan Ellis with a clear run on goal had missed the target, centre-back Guy Ansah-Palmer was left with a simple close-range tap-in on the end of a Daniel Vincent corner.  This enabled the Blues to finally get on the scoresheet and reduce the deficit when, for once, the Borough defence had failed to clear their lines.

United then created a string of opportunities to level the score with Vincent, new signing Arash Abdollahi and Nathaniel Mensah all narrowly missing the target, followed ten minutes from time by Leius Sinclair, after being played in by Vincent, failing to get the better of Ferjo.

Two minutes after Sinclair’s miss, Enfield made sure of the win when one of their pacey forwards Tabe Kennedy, making a fine individual run, drove through the Greenford defence before rounding Mulhall and placing the ball in the back of the empty Blues net.

NGU Team: Bailey Mulhall, Sean Hillier, Carl Bower, Sammy Adams, Guy Ansah-Palmer, Charlie Connor, Nathaniel Mensah, Daniel Vincent (captain), Leius Sinclair, Brian Testolin (Arash Abdollahi 70), Jordan Ellis
