Maidenhead is closer to having its own women's cricket team following a successful taster session for new players last week.

The Louis Baylis Trust-sponsored event, which focused on key techniques and was led by ECB qualified coaches, was attended by 27 women who were keen to learn more about the game, and more have signed up for the six-week course which follows.

North Maidenhead Cricket Club chairman Tony Drake, alongside Tameena Hussain and Thames Valley Cricket Academy's Jon Stewart have been the driving force behind the idea.

"As a community club we want to encourage and help women to get involved in cricket in a fun, safe and friendly environment," said Drake.

"The taster session enabled that to happen and we hope to give those who are interested an opportunity to develop within the sport.

Coach Stewart said: "It was absolutely brilliant to see so many ladies turned up on the night.

"Considering virtually all were complete beginners, there was definitely the basis for some to develop into talented players.

"It would be great to see all the ladies complete the six-week soft-ball course resulting in the creation of Maidenhead’s first ever ladies cricket team.

He added: "Well done to all those ladies who turned up and well done also to the club in making it happen."
