Short History of the club
In October of 2005, a group of players from the
Kells area met up in the Westway Bar and decided
to form a rugby club in Kells; from this meeting the
North Meath Rugby Club was established.
They set about finding other likeminded people to
play and began their first training sessions in the
sports grounds of the Community School lit by
lights they hired from Kells Hire.
In January the club went looking for challenge
matches and eventually Virginia’s second team
agreed to play against them in a challenge match. In
this first game North Meath Rugby players didn’t
have jerseys so each player wore whatever jersey
they had. North Meath were winning by half time,
so Virginia took the decision to play their players
from their first team, North Meath were defeated 19 – 16.

Following such a good beginning, North Meath
Rugby Club entered in the McGee Cup (North East
league). Eleven teams were involved, each playing
home and away games. North Meath Rugby Club
had no grounds, so they played all their matches
away. In March 2006 North Meath RFC beat
Balbriggan in Ashbourne to win the McGee Cup.

Next step was to enter the Anderson Cup (3rds
Town Cup), but were beaten in the quarter finals
losing to Mullingar the eventual winners of the Cup
that year.
In the 2007/08 season North Meath RFC won the
Anderson Cup beating Naas in the final 27 – 7. The
2008/09 season saw North Meath RC win the 2nds
Town Cup defeating Tullamore who were going for
3 in a row, 10 - 7 in the finals in Ashbourne.
With great interest being shown in rugby and the
club in Kells, the decision was made to start up a
junior team. In 2008 the underage section of the
club began with the U12s, totalling 18 players. Since
then the underage section has expanded rapidly.

The club now has Minis, U13s, U14s, U15s, and U17s
with a total of over 200 players involved. Of course
this would not be possible but for the supreme effort
and dedication of the volunteer coaches and the
determination of the committee and their belief in
the North Meath Rugby Club and the players to
succeed.

.
The BATTLE will commence on Friday 5th
