After a run of poor results another cup game was maybe what vale needed and the challenge of facing opposition 2 leagues above providing a real challenge. The difference was not evident as Vale looked comfortable early in possession as both teams feeling each other out.
The first half was a tight affair with few real chances although the woodwork was struck twice. First Delso in the Vale goal tipped a cross on to the bar, the visitors had looked dangerous early on from set pieces but it was Vale who almost scored from one mid way through the first half, another great Flores corner was headed across the face of goal by Millar and Mitchell headed back of the face of the crossbar. Bank also had a speculative 25 yard shot with his left foot that clipped the bar.
The second half NMV really took control of the game and had numerous chances to win the game in 90 minutes but the elusive goal never seemed like it was going to come. Keir and Paterson both had a few efforts off target and a lot of balls in to the box in good areas were not met by a yellow shirt. Reid was also denied a penalty when he was brought down in the 6 yard box so the game went in to extra time.
With weary legs all round it was Vale that had the best of the 1st period, but the visitors had a few chances in the second period that had the home side worried. Just as it looked like the game was heading to penalties Vale broke the deadlock in the 119th minute. Ure drove forward from right back and played the ball in to Reid, he fed the ball across the face to Sproule who dropped a shoulder and drove a left foot shot past the keeper to send the home sideline into celebration.
Vale weren't done and broke forward again, this time Notman carried the ball forward and cut in to pass to Paterson who composed himself and smashed a left foot drive home to seal the victory.
