North Shields almost clinch silverware in the North Shields RFC Super 7s

North Shields held a Super 7s tournament on Saturday at a dull and grey Preston Playing Fields. Thankfully the recent rain and thunderstorms held off as teams from Percy Park, Rockcliff, Ryton, Alnwick, Medicals and Novos showcased their speedsters in a great afternoon of rugby.

Group 1 was a strong line-up on paper - made up of; Novos 1, Rockcliff, Percy Park and Alnwick. A promising Rockcliff squad fell short in last place, conceding 88 points in the three games. Percy Park fielded a more youthful side as their first pick 7’s side played the night before at North Shields HQ on the RFU 7s circuit, never-the-less they managed to grind out a 24-14 win against coastal rivals Rockcliff and take 3rd place. Novos and Alnwick ended the group level on points with Alnwick pinching it on points difference to take their place in the Cup final, with Novos into the Plate Final.

Shields were placed in Group two - playing on pitch two, along with; Novos 2, Medicals and Ryton. In Shields’ first game of the day they saw off Novos 2 in emphatic fashion scoring 21 unanswered points to take the first game of the group. Medicals brushed aside Ryton to take top spot in the standings, followed by a comprehensive win against the hosts 31-5 and Novos 33-0. Shields held off Ryton 23-14 to take a place 2nd spot and a place in the Plate Final against Novos 1.

Before the finals commenced there was enough time to play a 3rd v 3rd game between Ryton and Percy Park, Ryton winning by less than a try in the end. The Plate final was won by Novos by a healthy margin of 5 tries to one against a courageous Shields side. The main event was won by Alnwick as they managed to hang on against a brave comeback from Medicals.

From everyone at North Shields RFC we would all like to thank everyone who participated, attended and helped out on the day to make it a very successful tournament and would like to extent our congratulations to the winners- Alnwick and Novos.
