Shields secure a bonus point away win to Ryton against a heavy wind…

Shields entered round 19 of Durham and Northumberland Division 2 against a mid table Ryton side. Going into the game Shields knew it was never an easy task travelling to Ryton and they had a few new heads since the last time we met including previous Shields-man Gregg Newlands.
Due to our usual match reporter Adam Houston being away with is North Rugby League side and Mark Hall being out of the country we didn’t have anyone available to write a full match report however are able to report on the match events captured on Twitter by Scott Rendles.
The first half saw Shields enjoy a large amount of ball possession with a heavy wind behind them. After several phases of forward drives in the Ryton 22m Leon Van-Zandvliet powered over, Samuel Brooks converted 0v7.
After defending well Shields eventually got away from danger and worked their way up field. It was from a break down where Shields scrum half Andrew Maxwell sold a dummy to onward coming Richard Carr to go under the sticks, Brooks converted 0v14.
Just before the half Shields number 6 Brett Sylph was first to react from a penalty where he tapped and went to score in the corner, conversion missed 0v19.
Half time – Ryton 0v19 North Shields
As the second half commenced Shields left off where they finished in the first half. Anthony Jordan burst through the Ryton defence to then pop to Ben Dalton who flung a pass to Matty Dockey who went over in the corner to secure the four try bonus point, conversion missed 0v24.
Then Jack Rendles threw a miss pass to Dockey who beat his winger and then drew the oncoming fullback and blindside winger to step back to the touchline and score his second of the day, conversion missed 0v29.
As it all looked to be over Ryton fought to the end with two unconverted try’s to see the game finish at 10v29.
Full time – Ryton 10v29 North Shields
