A contingent of 16 players representing Northwich U10s travelled to Helsby RUFC for an excellent morning's rugby in the Autumn sunshine. Due to a recruitment drive over the summer months the U10s can now field two teams at every fixture ensuring maximum time playing. Those completely new to the game have settled in and learnt quickly due to the team's friendly and open approach.
Progressing to the U10s age group brings in dramatic changes to the rules of play. The introduction of uncontested scrums, rucking and mauling has resulted in new skills and techniques being introduced over the last five weeks of training. The new rules of play have brought new challenges however every member of Northwich U10s has relished in the new challenge and their performance in their first two matches of the season has shown they are on the right path to success.
With so many new skills and rules to learn both Northwich and Helsby showed flashes of brilliance over the course of the morning. With the ability to turnover ball at almost any moment, the players quickly learnt how opportunities to score or make valuable ground can arise from almost no where. A harsh lesson was however learnt of the need to protect the ball as Northwich on occasions gave possession to the opposition with devastating effect.
It is always a pleasure to play against such a sporting and good natured team such as Helsby and Northwich will look forward to hosting them later in the season.
Special mention must go to new recruits Billy and Joe whom are completely new to the game. They played with fantastic enthusiasm and spirit and are a worthy addition to the squad.
