Norwich United faced Gorleston in their first midweek home game of the season and their fourth match of the league campaign. The Planters came into the match in good form having won their previous three home ties against Long Buckby, March Town United and Newmarket Town. Gorleston had won all their league games so far, winning 6-0 the previous Saturday.
Ryan Dickerson played in goal and had to make several smart saves in the first half to keep a lively Gorleston frontline at bay. Despite coming under significant pressure, the Planters backline held firm, with Sam Watts, Dillon Alexander and Mac Gee impressing in defence. Harry Barker and Haydn Davis were a threat on either flank, with Davis frequently moving inside and Barker looking to overlap whenever possible.
Striker Liam Jackson had a good chance after just 4 minutes when he headed just wide of the post and it didn't take much longer to break the deadlock as Norwich United opened the scoring on ten minutes after Barker surged down the flank, linking up well with striker Alby Matthews on the right. The ball was crossed over towards the far post and cleared the huddle of players in the box, falling to Jordan Forbes on the left touchline, Forbes controlled the ball well, took a touch and crossed the ball with precision towards the far post, with Planters players queuing up to head it over the line, Wones was the one who converted a very inviting ball from Forbes.
Gorleston put lots of pressure on throughout the rest of the first half but the Norwich United defence kept them at bay until half time.
HALF TIME - NORWICH UNITED 1 - 0 GORLESTON
Gorleston's supporters sheltered from the rain in the Norwich United stand during the second half and unfortunately chose this moment to start a relentless campaign of drumming throughout the second half. On the pitch things began to swing Gorleston's way and on 49 minutes, their prolific striker Christy Finch brought The Green's level with a tidy finish.
On 64 minutes Finch added a second with a superb strike from the edge of the box, before teeing up Connor Ingram to add a third in the 72nd minute. As Planters pushed forwards they inevitably left gaps at the back and Gorleston were able to add a fourth goal, late on, when Dillon Alexander was adjudged to have pulled a Gorleston player to the ground and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Ingram added his second and Gorleston's fourth from the spot as Norwich United struggled to cope with the inform Gorleston strikeforce.
Norwich United will hope to return in better form when they face league newcomers Lakenheath away in a weeks time.
