Match Preview

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Michael Shinn, the players, staff and fans of Newmarket Town for today’s FA Cup game.

As I write our opponents have just beaten Haverhill Rovers 2-1, giving them four wins from four in the league. Michael has signed established, proven players in the Summer, that have clearly strengthened their squad. They will no doubt mount a serious title challenge this season and look like a club very much on the up. We know we will have to be at our very best today if we hope to progress further in this prestigious competition.

Last week saw us get our league campaign up and running with our first three points of the season against a hard working March Town side. We were pleased to have Shaun Wones and Haydn Davis back available for selection with the former coming straight back in to the starting eleven, showing no sign of rustiness after his lengthy absence from the side. Shaun’s presence and leadership is a big plus for us and despite now entering the twilight of his playing career, his influence will be vital for us in the weeks and months ahead. Max Melanson once again demonstrated his quality both in possession and in front of goal, getting sharper with each game he plays.

Our U21’s had a credible 0-0 draw against a resilient Sprowston Athletic side as many of the team continue to transition from junior to senior football. The game spoilt by an inadequate refereeing performance by a gentleman who to be kind is probably being asked to continue well beyond a well earned retirement. It does however highlight the shortage of young referees coming into the game, something that has to be high on national and local FA agenda.

Finally it’s been great to watch football over the weekend without artificial crowd noise, with fans returning to stadiums on mass. Make some noise today!
