A great first year for the Scorpions women!

The Nottingham Scorpion women have dominated the world of Australian Football in 2017 and are keen to recruit more enthusiastic women to join the clan.

Seven female scorpions were part of the Great Britain team who competed at the International Cup in Melbourne in August. Playing fixtures against Fiji, Canada, Pakistan, Ireland and USA the GB Swans finished third in a nail biting 3rd and 4th play off match against USA.

In October seven female scorpions represented England and two played for Wales in the annual Euro Cup competition which was held in Bordeaux, France. The England Vixens claimed the title of Euro Cup champions at the tournament. One of the new players at the Scorpions who participated in the tournament was Jo Scrimshaw who said ‘Initially I was nervous about playing AFL as it is fast paced and looks really complicated. However, it is great fun and a highly addictive game. The coaching and training sessions are fab and playing afl has provided lots of fantastic opportunities to meet lots of new friends and take part in some exciting tournaments around the UK and Europe’.

Playing Australian Football allows women to use skills from other sports such as football, netball, basketball, rugby and Gaelic football and try and new challenge. The game appeals to women who love team games and physically demanding sports.

With women’s participation set to grow in 2018 across the country we have many more local fixtures arranged to allow beginners the opportunity to try out the sport without the commitment of long distance travel for games.

So if you fancy trying out a new sport then get in touch! You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
