A strong finish after a slow and inaccurate start, with a good showing from our new players

On a sunny Sunday in May the mighty Scorpions were once again on the road. This time to face the might of Tyne Tees Tigers.

The day started off strongly with Sam Simons turning up straight from training in his wrestling suit almost instantly giving him and insurmountable lead in the running for DotD. We were quickly changed and warming up going through the motions preparing for the game ahead. Having faced Tyne Tees last season we knew that we couldn’t take the victory for granted and that they would come out hard so we had to match it mark for mark.

As expected the Tigers had come out fighting but failed to turn that into scoring opportunities the scorpions’ had their fair share of point opportunities but had failed to turn that into goals. Shout out to Lee Chapman finding his feet at half forward and for Josh Richards to sacrificing his shoulder 30 seconds in just so he didn’t have to pay his match fee. At the end of the first quarter the score read 1.10.16 to 0.3.3 in favour of the Scorpions.

With a short rest and fresh from the debrief the Scorpions hit the second quarter hard with big kicks from Carl Smith and Tom Would getting off the mark on his debut. Martin Kearney took this quarter as an opportunity to help Tom Stone get back into contention for golden boot by expertly slotting most of his shots left or right of six points and taking a falcon; all for his teammates self-esteem. We salute you Sir. Tigers kept on the pressure and the second quarter finished 6.11.47 to 3.4.22.

After a heated debate at half time where Ian Miller had given our defensive strategy a fail much to the chagrin of Lee Neicho, we were once again out. Sam Simons and Josh Wardle took massive leaps towards the contest for lead boot which come to sharp end of the season looks like it could be a nail biter.

Martin Kearney had decided enough was enough and was back to kicking straight through the middle hitting 5 in the quarter. Ashley Swift had managed to forget that he was injured and came on for the first time to replace Josh Richards and within seconds had linked front to back with Marcus Ward and Ian Miller to slot a training ground set piece right through to middle. Shout out to Tom Would for taking a visit behind the stands to make sure his breakfast had been digested properly after giving it all out on the field. With Tees starting to tire the third quarter ended 15.13.103 to 5.5.35.

For the final quarter scorpions did what they do best and just played nice cross pitch footy putting in classy performances against a fading Tees team the final score ended 22.18.150 to 6.8.44.

Players player was a varied affair with Ian Miller, Tom Would, James Cobbledick and Martin Kearney claiming votes, but best on ground for the day was Neil de Joux. Shout outs to the Stalwarts Rob Goliah, Andrew Batchelor and the Big Kicking Return from Rich Lucas at full back. Big scorers on the day were Martin Kearney 6 Tom Stone 5 and Ian Miller 3.
