16 lads enjoyed the final RFU run 7's tournament of pre season. The boys finished 2nd and now look forward to Rockcliff on Fri 16th August.

Squad - Christian Selkirk (Captain) David Marshall, David Bowman (colt) Alex Cleminson, Ross Cleminson, Luke Foster, Stewart Wilson, Mike Patrickson, Ryan Crowson, Francis Eze, Ryan Gibson (colt) Shaun O'Connell, Jonny Bulfin, Tom Burford, Justin Taylor, Stewart Wilson

Much better supported event on this occasion as Alnwick came out to play on a Friday as did Ryton. So four games in total to play - just as well as squad numbers swelled from 12 to 16 on the day of the event.

The boys have really supported the club motto "Rugby for all, rugby for life" during pre season and did so again. A melting pot of players were assembled for one last push as colts were joined by a couple of lads from the 2's but the mainstay of the team coming from the 3/4's.

I really enjoyed watching the boys during the RFU 7s events as it is rare that I get to see our other club players put the shirt on. Very proud to see them be competitive on every occasion, playing the games in the right spirit and socialising well together. A great achievement as we again seek to put four sides out this season.

Of special note was the energy of Francis Eze - if he was to attend training regularly he would soon rocket up the sides. In addition, their were great cameo's from Shaun O'Connell including some awesome offloading and from Alex Cleminson who turned over the ball at most of the rucks he visited. Young colts Ryan Gibson and David Bowman continue to show they are up to senior rugby. In particular David's pace led to him scoring seven untouched tries. Finally, I thought David Marshall was class all evening long - once again showing that he should be playing first team rugby when his work commitments allow.

Thank you to Jack Pellew and Christian Selkirk for helping organise our attendance at the three events. Along with Prudhoe/Stocksfield we were the only to sides to attend all three RFU run events.

Cheers to the refs and Jack Lambert and Larry Mew for organising the sevens tournaments. Shame your efforts were not better supported by the local clubs. Thought it was strange that Nth Shields and Morpeth did not enter sides despite hosting an event. The matches were generally played in great spirit although Ryton had some poor moments including getting a player sent off for swearing at an official. Special shout out to the Prudoe boys who I thought played well above their league standing and were as good in the bar afterwards.

Next up for our 3's and 4's is the beerfest fixture on Friday 16th August vs Rockcliff.

Up the Vos !
