Banbury Beaten By Boro

Nuneaton faced a tough task yesterday taking on Banbury United who sit 14th in the Vanarama National League North. However despite their being 17 places between the two sides it would be the underdogs Nuneaton who progressed to the next round of the FA Trophy.

Boro started the game on the front foot taking the lead after just 6 minutes when a scramble in the box preceded a Leroy Lita effort which deflected off a defender and into the net from close range. The momentum then shifted as the home side began to create numerous chances as they looked to score the equaliser. That equaliser came in the 38th minute after the Puritans left back Jack Davies sent in a cross towards the back post that was met by the head of right back Tai Fleming who headed United level. The scores wouldn’t remain level for long however as Boro’s own full back Alex Lafleur helped his side regain the lead in the 43rd minute with a low effort that was driven through a crowd of Banbury players and into the net.

Half Time 1-2

The momentum was certainly with the home side after the break with them once again creating numerous chances to score as they looked to equalise for a second time. Boro were able to stand strong despite a flurry of corners and long range efforts from the Puritan’s front line. Skipper Scott McManus managed to shift the momentum back I. The favour of the visitors a he headed home from a corner with around 15 minutes to go. However the home side were able to peg the visitors back on the 80th minute as Adi Yussuf’s effort from inside the box beat Dan Jezeph before colliding with the post directing the ball into the goal. Boro believed they had further extended their lead but an offside flag prevented that goal from counting. A 4th goal did come the way of the Boro as Owen Oseni dispossessed the United goalkeeper before stinking into an empty net.

Full Time: 2-4
