Tuesday 5th November

Callum Powell scored his first hat-trick for the club, as Nuneaton came from behind to defeat Daventry Town 3-1 in the Southern League Cup.

Powell scored all his goals after Adam Confue put the hosts into the lead with a 30-yard strike to beat Belford.
Just over 10 minutes later, Boro were level thanks to Powell before putting his side ahead for the first time with a quarter of a hour remaining.

The hat-trick goal came on the 85th minute with a neat low strike giving Boro passage to the next round.

Jimmy Ginnelly made five changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Royston Town on Saturday, handing Nathan Parker his first team debut following his move from the U21’s to the first team.

Michael Richens came close for Boro with a curling free-kick before Kieran Fitzgerald’s cross was inches away from being headed in by a team-mate.

With the hosts growing in confidence, Taylor Orosz and Aaron King linked up well before Orosz’s effort hit the side netting. They took advantage of their control in the game when Confue’s wonderful strike beat Ty Belford to hand Town a shock lead.

However, it wasn’t long before Nuneaton were level. With Candlin rounding the keeper, Powell picked up the loose ball before curling into an empty net to draw Boro level.

Despite being pegged back, Daventry deserve credit for their performance. Fitzgerald had two opportunites just after the hour mark to retake the lead, but Belford denied the dangerous winger.

The comeback was complete when Powell received the ball before slotting past the debutant goalkeeper, Bradley Lashley.

The second Boro goal killed the tempo of Arron Parkinson’s side and Powell grabbed his third with another neat strike.

It was another proud moment for the club on Tuesday evening, when Edward Moore replaced Powell to make his first team debut.

Moore is now the fifth Nuneaton youth player to represent the first team this season.

With no game this Saturday, Boro’s next game is a week on Saturday when Stratford Town visit Liberty Way.

Team: T.Belford, Julien, Parker, Clifton, Kettle, Byrne, Powell, Richens, Candlin, Kelly-Evans, Verma.

Subs: Wassall, Bull, Moore, Lavery.
