A youthful Boro side made up of U18 and U21s players gave a very good account of themselves in a competitive friendly away at Leicester Road.
The home side were sure to provide a stern test for Boro and so it proved.
Boro started well and the game soon became stretched with action at both ends of the pitch.
The best of the early chances fell to the home side but two good saves from Boro's Howe kept the sides level.
After the opening 15 minutes Leicester Road started to take control and Boro were forced on to the back foot.
The home side then took the lead with an angled finish in the 22nd minute.
This spurred Boro on and they started to exert pressure of their own but couldn't find a way through the home defence.
Having weathered Boro's pressure the home side took control of the game with two goals in two minutes.
Both were excellent finishes, the first came in the 36th minute and was followed up with another in the 38th to make it 3-0.
Again Boro showed an excellent attitude to fight back and give themselves a lifeline in the 42nd minute courtesy of a superb finish by Joel Heeley.
HT: 3-1
Both sides made wholesale changes at the break to give vital minutes to their respective squads.
Substitute Boro keeper Callum Smith was forced into a superb save early in the second-half to keep Boro in the game.
Boro then had a good period of pressure as they looked for a way back.
On the hour mark Louis Baker's free-kick caused problems for the home defence but they managed to clear their lines.
For the next ten minutes Boro carved out a number of good opportunities but couldn't turn any of them into goals.
Leicester Road then hit back but Smith in the Boro goal stood firm to deny them.
The last clear chance of the game fell to Boro's Zach Tellyn who forced the home keeper into a fine finger tip save.
After only being together for five weeks Boro's youngsters gave a very good account of themselves against a strong Leicester Road side and took plenty of positives from the game.
