Last Monday, Nuneaton Borough travelled to Lincolnshire to take on high flying Stamford who had started the season unbeaten. The game began like a game of pinball with both teams getting into dangerous areas but being unable to get a clear chance at goal. James Blunden decided to take the game into his own hands, firing an effort towards goal, which was slid in by Jack Duffy at the far post. I’m sure this left many Boro fans thinking here we go again after 2 previous defeats. However, this fired Boro up with in the 22nd minute Leroy Lita winning a penalty after being wrestled to the ground by the keeper. Lita struck his penalty towards the bottom left corner but was matched by a super save from Daniel Wallis. This didn’t set back Boro as 4 minutes later Matty Stenson was back at his old tricks, nodding in a pinpoint accurate header into the back of the net leaving the keeper helpless. Stamford responded by piling on the pressure pushing bodies forward which they were rewarded with a penalty in the 43rd minute with Oliver Brown-Hill making no mistake from the spot. This wasn’t the only action left in the first half as Kane Richards grabbed an equaliser just before the break with a deflected effort from outside the box deceiving the keeper.
Half Time 2-2
The second half saw the home side come out fired up with a ball into the box giving Jack Blunden an easy opportunity which he was unable to convert soon after kick off. The pressure eventually got to Boro in the end with a looping ball into the box being unable to be cleared, falling to the prolific Jack Duffy who grabbed his 2nd of the contest, regaining the Daniels lead. The half continued this trend as Stamford peppered the Boro goal but, heroics from Liam Castle and the Boro back line kept them in the contest, with goal line scrambles and last ditch clearances. Jack Duffy had multiple chances to seal the contest as well as grab his hat trick but was unable to convert. These chances came back to haunt the Daniels when two minutes from time, a ball came into the box which Leroy Lita backhealed assisting Connor Furlong to earn a point for Boro, slotting into the bottom right corner causing absolute pandemonium in the away end. Hopefully this will be the perfect confidence boost for Boro to kick start their season.
