Jamie Riley reports from Liberty Way;
Nuneaton Borough picked up their first league win of the season in style after a triumphant 6-2
home victory against St. Ives Town.
Ravi Shamsi managed to pick up five goals in a dominant Boro display which saw a much needed three points claimed.
Despite the fact that Boro looked the more likely to score early on, it was the visitors who broke the
deadlock from the penalty spot in the 12th minute after a block in the box was judged to have hit the hand of a Boro defender. Marc Richards was able to send Breeden the wrong way from the spot and against the run of play, gave the Ives a 1-0 lead.
The hosts kept up the pressure and were nearly rewarded in the 19th minute when Kaziboni charged down the right with the ball and managed to sweep a low driven cross towards the front post which came off an Ives defender and was smothered on the line by Conway.
Only a minute later, Nuneaton found themselves level when Lita was able to find Tomkinson on the
left wing. He passed it into Shamsi who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from inside the box.
The game continued its competitive edge with both teams looking to take the lead. It was Boro who were able to do just that in the 38th minute when Shamsi received the ball on the left side of the box and curled the ball into the top corner past the helpless goalkeeper.
However, the lead would only last five minutes when a smart turn and measured ball found the right foot of Ballinger. His close range side footed shot flew past Breeden making it 2-2.
HT: 2-2
It was the away side who had the first real chance of the second half when a cross was flicked onto the post before being gathered by Breeden.
The close call appeared to have woken the home side up as they soon found themselves in front
once again in the 53rd minute after they were awarded a penalty. From the spot kick Shamsi was able to secure his first hat-trick for the club by slotting the ball into the bottom left corner past Conway.
The hosts kept up their intensity and found themselves 4-2 up on the 70th minute after a short corner found Kaziboni on the edge of the box. He fired the ball into the top right corner with it taking a slight deflection on it's way in.
Four became five just over ten minutes later when, in the 83rd minute, Shamsi latched onto a ball in the box and calmly rolled it into the bottom corner making it 5-2.
Shamsi wasn’t finished there.
Not satisfied with his four goals, in the first minute of added time, he picked up the ball in the centre of the box and guided his strike into the right corner to make it 6-2.
This was a much improved showing from Boro that gained a fully deserved three points.
