Nuneaton secured their first victory of the new season with a solid 2-0 win at Liberty Way against Leiston Town.
A deflected Carl Baker shot and a classy finish from Marcus Kelly ended a winless run for the home side and made sure the Boro faithful went home smiling.

The game also saw a rare occurrence with Boro fielding father and son, Carl and Louis Baker, in a competitive fixture.

Boro started the brightest of the two sides with Louis Baker finding space on the right and releasing a shot but he was unable to guide it on target.
In the 9th minute Louis Baker looked to have got free but the linesman’s flag halted his run.

The hosts made their early pressure count with 13 minutes gone as a short corner taken by Kelly found Carl Baker with space on the left. He skipped past the first man and released a powerful shot which the Leiston keeper could only parry onto one of his own defenders and the ball cannoned into the net making it 1-0 to Boro.

Boro continued to control proceedings before Leiston hit back to force quick-fire corners but the Boro defence held firm.

With 28 minutes on the clock the home side doubled their lead when McManus lifted a delightful ball over the Leiston defence to release Kelly who emphatically fired the ball past Donkin.

Leiston replied 3 minutes later with a golden chance of their own as Mills intercepted a defensive pass and fired a testing shot which Breeden matched well.
On the stroke of half-time Breeden was forced into action once more to deny the visitors.

Leiston came flying out of the blocks to start the second-half with an early effort from Joseph Marsden but it sailed high and wide to the Boro’s relief.
The visitors continued their pressure with Mills whose attempted chip was parried well by an on-rushing Breeden. The Boro keeper then recovered quickly to punch away the following cross.

The hosts were inches away from getting a third after 63 minutes when Carl Baker floated in a cross which found Massiah McDonald free in the 6-yard box, however he was unable to direct his header on target.
Carl Baker almost extended Boro’s lead in the 70th minute when, after a twisting run, his effort just went wide of the post.

Leiston had two efforts bravely blocked in the final ten minutes as they searched for an equaliser but Boro managed the game well to protect their two-goal lead and secure the three points.
