In another rain lashed game Boro fell to the bottom of the league after a 2-0 away defeat to Royston Town. A first-half brace from Galliford was enough to secure Nuneaton’s sixth consecutive league defeat.
Boro had the first effort of note in the 7th minute but it came to nothing. The hosts were on the front foot and nearly saw themselves go ahead after ten minutes when a shot from last seasons top scorer Brandon Adams was well saved by Breeden in the Boro goal.
Seven minutes later Royston broke the deadlock after former Luton midfielder Isaac Galliford broke into the box and unleashed his low driven shot past the Boro number one and into the back of the net.
A shot from distance almost doubled Royston’s advantage in the 20th minute but flew just wide.
One became two in the 27th minute when a ball in from the left by Titchmarsh towards the edge of the box was controlled and powerfully finished by Galliford, giving the visitors a mountain to climb.
Scott McManus made a brave block just after the half-hour mark to keep Boro’s hopes alive.
Boro survived another close call in the 37th minute when the Royston forward poked the ball wide from six yards out.
The home side almost found themselves three to the good after 39 minutes when Adams found himself one on one with Breeden who managed to turn the effort away for a corner.
HT: 2-0
The hosts started the second-half the better and they nearly got a third after 48 minutes when an Adams effort was saved by Breeden.
With 57 minutes gone a cross was met by the Royston number seven whose effort rebounded off the post.
Boro nearly got one back in the 65th minute when half-time substitute Cain Noble’s strike from the edge of the box was saved by a diving Welch.
Debutant Liam Daly was cautioned for Boro in the 75th minute as the rain continued to fall.
Substitute Louis Baker thought he had put himself on the scoresheet for Boro in the 88th minute when a through ball found the youngster whose shot from the edge of the box was well parried by Welch.
That proved to be the last effort of the game as Boro slipped to another disappointing defeat in a game where they rarely threatened.
