A biting cold wind greeted the Eds at the Silhillians - ever-welcoming hosts in the Clubhouse, and competitive foes on the field.
The Eds had won the home fixture and were keen to win away not only for the League points, but for the fabled Bog Seat which they took back to Weddington Road.
The Ed’s started well and were in control for the first twenty-five minutes, scoring three tries in the process. From a catch-and-drive they drove over the line, No10 Ryan Southall had latched onto the drive and it was he who stole over for the try: 0-7.
Ed’s defence was in good form and the passing game working well. Having stretched the home defence wide to the right, they switched to the left. No 12 Matt Loveday spotted a gap and went through to score: 0-12. A trademark kick return by No15 Taine Young led to a scrambled Sils' defence. The backs, including No5 Jason Roberts, did well to keep the ball alive for Loveday to finish the move: 0-19.
Old Eds may have been contemplating a fourth-try bonus point, but Silhillians had other plans. A period of possession in the Eds' 22 culminated in a slick passing move that put their Left-Wing in for a try in the corner: 5-19.
The second period saw the Sils exerting early pressure, forcing a try-saving tackle from No9 Brad Darlaston – who was carded for a second effort from the ground. Southall move to Scrum-Half and Loveday to Stand-Off. Play continued evenly with defences on top, until the Sil's competitive No9 broke through and fed his Right-Wing for the try: 12-19 and the Sils were back in the match.
The game carried on as before until the referee called ‘last play'. Somehow the Sils conjured up a strike from 60m to take the score to 17-19. A successful conversion would result in a draw. Unfortunately, from a Sils' point of view, the kick was successful as the Ed’s gave a huge sigh of relief.
