Storm Dennis greeted the Eds on their visit to long-time friends and rivals Earlsdon. Form favoured the Eds but Earlsdon had other ideas. Both defences played well and, given the conditions, the winner was always going to be the team that made fewest errors. Another cohesive team performance from the Eds as their forwards created a platform to provide opportunities for the backs.
Eds started strongly looking likely to score in the opening minutes as the backs put them into the Earlsdon 22 and No 8 Ryan Hatch got to within 5m only for 2 poor passes to end the move. Earlsdon took advantage of turnover ball to get into the Eds’ 22 and score from a looping backs’ move: 5-0. Good continuity play by the Eds culminated in a score for No 14 Jack Darlaston: 5-5. Shortly after, a training ground move saw Hatch, at first receiver pass to No 15 Taine Young, on an inside run into the Earlsdon 22. He drew the last defender and passed for No10 Ryan Southall to touch down beneath the posts, converted by Young: 5-12.
Earlsdon responded with a period of pressure resulting in an Eds’ kick being charged down over the line for a deserved try: 10-12. Just before half-time an Eds’ line-out created a drive over the line, completed by No7 Phil King: 10-17.
The first ten minutes of the second half was played in Eds’ territory. However, the Eds broke loose when Young found a gap on the right wing and passed inside to newcomer replacement No9 Will Canning, who fed the ball to No13 Craig Jones who was dragged down just short of the line. Shortly after, a scrummage drive over the line was completed by Hatch for the try: 10-22.
Earlsdon were far from done and they conjured up long periods of possession but were unable to break down the solid Eds’ defence. In the closing minutes the Eds scrum again drove over the line but were unable to touch down.
Final score: 10-22
