Nuthurst top order batsmen fail to support as Raggy Singh almost carries his bat throughout the innings

Nuthurst were inserted on an even tempered wicket and started off well with Raggy Singh (85) and Jonny Willis (12) putting on 36 before the latter was bowled. 19 runs were added for the next wicket before Scott Barron was frustrated into edging a drive to the wicket keeper in an effort to get off the mark. Oliver Prior was run out and successive batsmen failed to stay with Raggy as he passed his 50 and took the score on to 107 for 7. Nuthurst batters 3 through 8 only managed 13 runs off the bat. In at number 9 Graham Prior (16) looked to be setting things right with 4 well struck fours before holing out over the bowler's head. Keith Greenwood (20) shared the largest stand of the innings with Raggy as they put on 40 before he was disappointingly adjudged LBW with the score on 165. Raggy finally ran out of steam and and was out to a well judged catch at deep extra cover to bring the Nuthurst innings to a close 15 minutes before the due tea time and leaving Henfield to chase down a target of 167.

David Thompson provided an excellent tea for us all and the clouds evaporated as Nuthurst took to the field. Excellent opening spells of bowling by Graham Prior (2 for 20) and Keith Greenwood (1 for 19) gave Nuthurst an excellent start as both the Henfield openers were caught and bowled without having scored. Two wickets down for no runs and the number three was bowled by Graham Prior with the score on six. Also, some great pieces of fielding at this time provided for optimism of a victory in favour of Nuthurst. However the relentless sun took its toll on the opening bowlers, and the Henfield number 4 and number 5 bats, Messrs M White (50) and H Stewart (40), took time to establish their presence on the field. They put on 70 before Jeremy James (3 for 32) took the first of his three wickets. Henfield, however still had batting to come and P Pheasant (41) added 47 with M White and 28 with K Kanari (25 no) before being out to a fine catch by David Thompson, who had to make up a lot of ground to get to the ball. Dropped catches had not helped Nuthurst's cause and Henfield passed the target with 4 wickets in hand.

Both sides adjourned for a drink or two at the Black Horse, enjoying the evening air in the pub garden. Apart from the ifs and buts it had been a good days cricket outing for both teams.
