Following the withdrawal of Felbridge from our scheduled fixture, Nuthurst travelled to a new opponent, Langton Green. Having had a couple of tough matches the Nutters were keen to make a return to winning ways. We welcomed back Captain Bob from his recent travels to add his tactical prowess to his teams armoury!
Langton Green won the toss and elected to bat. An early wicket for Chippie (24 - 1) saw Langton 16 for 1, however Langton skipper Ben Allatt along with No 3 bat Hughes proceeded to add 90 runs in a free scoring partnership that threatened to put the game beyond Nuthurst. Jeremy James (70 - 3 ) and Will Rossiter (20 - 0) were particularly harshly dealt with. Jez's persistence and accuracy were finally rewarded with 3 wickets, including a fantastic caught and bowled as Hughes sent an "exocet" in his direction!
Having seen off the Langton Green's top order the Nuthurst bowlers in the shape of Jonny Willis (25 - 2), Simon Whitehouse (17 - 1) and Keith Greenwood (17 - 3) took regular wickets, aided by some good fielding (great to see how calmly Nathan Williams took his first catch for the club) saw Langton reduced to 191 all out in 37 overs.
Nuthurst made a solid start in reply David Butcher (15) and Will Rossiter (32) posting a 50 run opening partnership, both fell with the score on 53. Samways (18) and Willis (73) then set about rebuilding. Willis in addition to making his second 50 of the season, remarkably out ran the normally "nimble" Samways whilst building their partnership. James Simpson (15) and Charlie South (18) made good contributions as Nuthurst cruised to a comfortable and welcome victory.
This was a most enjoyable game and Langton Green proved to excellent hosts, the tea was certainly outstanding and enjoyed by all! Hopefully we will have the opportunity to play again next season.
