Sunday 9th May brought the Headliners to play at Mannings Heath. At last there was some warmer weather, despite Chippy's protestations to the contrary as he hunched over the scorebook wearing as many layers of clothes that he could lay his hands on.
Having won the toss Raggy decided to reunite an opening partnership last seen in action at Sandwich in 2017. So Jonty and your humble author set themselves to build a platform for the team.
Sadly our hopes of a healthy partnership were swiftly dashed as Jonty chipped his second ball back to the bowler. Deadly coming in at three quickly settled and then played some delightful cover drives off Haq's bowling. Meanwhile Dilshan's hostile pace continued to accelerate as he settled into his spell, however Nuthurst's 2nd wicket partnership showed no obsequiousness in their approach to the opening bowlers efforts. Having put on 50 together Deadly departed for an entertaining 33.
Runs continued to flow and almost everyone who came to the crease made double figures. Some powerful batting from Raggy and Rahul coupled with a fine final flourish from DT and James saw Nuthurst set a commanding total of 235 for 6 declared.
As Nuthurst began their attempt to bowl their way to victory it was clear that the fielding "highs" of last weeks game were not to be repeated, indeed to say that the Nutters were profligate with their chances would be something of an understatement as a hatful of chances were put down. Despite this DT took a "blinding" catch at square leg and once Dilshan's bright innings of 65 was brought to an end by a stunning catch by James the result didn't really seem in doubt. It is to the Headliners credit that they held out, seeing their resistance finally ended with less than 3 overs of the match remaining as all rounder Jonny Willis wrapped up the final 2 wickets.
Great to see the Nutters winning run continue and seeing such a team effort with runs and wickets being spread around the team.
