Poachers hunt for three points successful...Dave Tolchard reports.

Oadby were able to field a strong side today despite a few last minute withdrawals from the side. Joe Hopewell moved into central defence and Lewis Mclean returned at left back in place of Lynus King who had a family emergency and Jordan Pick came in in place of Joe French. Oadby intended to start the game on the front foot and press their opposition and this intention was evident in the first few minutes when Carlton Beardmore fired wide in the first minute. Two minutes later Harry Alcock had a shot well blocked. There was another flurry of Oadby chances on 17 minutes when a cross from Jordan Pick evaded the on rushing forwards. Then following a short corner Picks cross was headed against the Huntingdon bar by Alcock. Shortly after Nuno Gomez fired wide from the edge of the box. Oadby continued to have the lions share of the play when Pick again shot wide from an Alcock pass.

Huntingdons first chance of the game came in the 24th minute when Bento was through on goal. His shot beat Sam Lomax in the Oadby goal, only for it to rebound off the post and cleared to safety. Two minutes later Goran Smilkov managed to hit the other post with a shot across the goal. Joe Hopewell then shot wide for Oadby from 30 yards following a free kick and Jordan Pick couldn’t quite get on the end of a mis-hit shot from Alcock. The half finished with both Smilkov and Michael Chow shooting wide for Huntingdon.

The second half started with an early couple of chances for Oadby, with Callum Armsden having a shot well saved by Andrew Hewit in the Huntingdon goal. Then Armsden shot wide from a similar position. On 54 minutes Giulano Staffieri shot wide when well placed for Huntingdon and then at the other end a lovely cross from Ben Taylor was headed just wide of the right hand post by Carlton Beardmore. Alcock had a shot blocked in the next attack. The Oadby pressure finally reaped rewards on the hour when Ben Taylor came forward from right back, played a one, two with Harry Alcock and despite the ball bobbling like crazy on the rutted pitch managed to finish low into the bottom right hand corner to put the poachers ahead. A fine goal! Alcock had a shot well saved by Hewitt 5 minutes later and Callum Steer shot just wide moments later. Nuno Gomez nearly caught Hewitt out with a cross cum shot. Only the player himself will know which it was!!

Hewitt was again called into action on 77 minutes after he saved Alcock’s effort from Steer’s cross. From the corner Alcock headed the ball back into the danger area for picks header to be collected calmly by the keeper. The second and killer Oadby goal arrived on 84 minutes through a more orthodox source when Lewis McLean put Alcock through who finished with aplomb! A deserved win for Oadby in the end who registered 20 efforts on goal during the game. Manager Dave Clay said afterwards “The important thing today was to come away with three points and the lads stuck to their task well, particularly in the second half”.
