Oddballs retain UEL Trophy

Oddballs retain UEL Trophy

Ryan Hewitt12 Jul 2015 - 13:05

The annual Oddballs vs UEL match took place on 8th July at Cornwood.

After a day of intense negotiations over handicapping and rule-setting the scene was set. The rules in brief:
Oddballs would bat first on a score of minus 60 runs.
Oddballs players would retire at 25, UEL players to bat through
Maximum of four overs per bowler with a “gentleman’s agreement” that Oddballs would give everyone a bowl.

Jan Morton opened the bowling and bowled a good line as his first two overs went for just 11 runs. Opening batsmen Hewitt and Thornberry looking to push the score on but struggling to get Janner away. At the other end Swabey started by being hit for two boundaries from Chewy but struck in his sixth ball as he bowled Slugger round his legs for one. Swabey struck in his next over as Evan Cox skied one to Phil Ellis to perish for two. Ryan Jones entered the fray but made just one run as Mills struck in his first over to get Jones out caught. Oddballs were 28-3 (so essentially minus 32 for three) after five overs.

Ewan Grewal was next in and announced himself with a huge straight six off Mills; at the other end Chewy was grafting away and made his 25… However, due to incompetence in the score box he was cruelly denied a not out as Mills bowled him next ball for his second wicket, Mills would finish 2-39 from his four overs. Oddballs passed the sixty run mark to eliminate their handicap and start building a score - Ted Lyth came to the middle and promptly scored his first ever Oddballs run to huge applause from his team mates. The elation was short lived as Lyth re-injured his calf and was forced to use a runner for the rest of his innings… Ted reached 10 before he finally left the field retired-out. As Grewal retired on 25, Passman and Martyn were in the middle looking to push on the Oddballs score; Passman made 12 before Rich Underhill had him caught. Tookey came in looking to smash it but was caught superbly on the rope for a duck off the bowling of Lambert. Martyn continued to accumulate getting to twenty but was then caught off Underhill.

Skipper Dan Stones then came in and couldn’t middle it as he scraped around for four runs. At that point Underhill enjoyed his moment of the match as a decent ball was played on by Stones to see him bowled and Underhill grab his third wicket finishing 3-23 to be the pick of the UEL bowlers. Justin Hemmings got 7 not out and Grewal returned to get a few more runs finishing 36 not out. Oddballs totalled 152-9 meaning, after handicap, that UEL needed 93 to win from twenty overs.

Clayton and Lambert opened the batting but opening bowlers Chewy and Cox were not in the mood to give them anything as the first two overs went for just two runs. Lambert was stumped by Hemmings off Cox for a duck and Clayton was caught by Martyn off Hewitt as UEL started with a score of 2-2.

Ryan Jones came into the attack and didn’t disappoint as he had Swabey caught for three and then bowled Downer for 2 to finish 2-2 – UEL now 14-4 and in real trouble. Stonesy came on and bowled a tight spell of 0-6 from two but it was the next bowling change which sealed the game and created a bit of history. Alex Passman bowled Mills (5) and Jan Morton (11) as well as R Mills (3) in a devastating burst grabbing himself 3-13. At the other end Slugger was looking for his first Oddballs wicket in his eleventh year with the club. In the first over Slugger put down a c&b chance and the next ball saw Jones drop a dolly – It seemed Slugger was destined never to take an Oddballs scalp. However, in his second over he bowled a nice length ball to Cartwright who top edged it to the waiting Chewy at short cover to get the Kraken his first ever wicket with joyous scenes on the field. He would finish 1-16 from four overs.

Grewal came on bowling some saucy spin and had Underhill caught brilliantly by Ryan Jones for 8. Tookey followed up his appalling fielding display with a wicketless spell before Steve Martyn came on to take the last wicket leaving UEL 79 all out to hand victory to Oddballs by 13 runs.
