A day of Firsts

What to say as Sundays game turned out to be a day of firsts:
1. We batted first
2. Kenny did his first tea after discovering his lodgings does have a kitchen
3. The VC decided to contribute something

So it all started at 1:55 as the Offchurch changing room sat agog as the skipper declared we were “having a bat!”
Players quickly scampered about getting pads from cars etc in this unaccustomed environment. The Chairman and Geoff opened the batting against the opposition from Oakfield but with Geoff soon gone and quickly followed by Mick, 1940’s Mark was despatched to the crease. With these 2 stroke makers at the wicket the score raced along at nearly a run an over! However the ‘ship was steadied’ with a partnership of 50. When this pairing were dismissed in quick succession the VC and OC Tom were left to pick up the reins. OC Tom was nothing but steadfast in his defence fending off all-comers while at the other end the old VC returned to club everything in sight. With a partnership of just under 100 (OC Tom 15, VC 95) both fell towards the end of the innings which finished on 201 – our highest score of the year and the 4th game in a row a (different) batsman has scored 50+!

Nobody held out much hope for tea but as we entered the pavilion our spirts were raised by the friendly sight of a battenburg, at least there would be something to chew on! Overall for a first effort the tea wasn’t that bad – Good Effort Kenny.

The visitors response was always a touch slow and very quickly the run rate was rising with a good opening bowling partnership from Bert and DS. For the most part boundaries were difficult to come by and all the bowlers did well. DS took 2 wickets, Kenny another and Ryan dismissing the one Oakfield player who looked like he might cause us a problem, and at the end the even the Skipper completed an over – welcome back!
Oakfield managed 145 and so we are now 4 from 4 with Massey Ferguson to come this week.

A quick word of warning I’m advised 1940’s Mark will be doing the teas in a fortnights time…..I suspect that ‘the cake’ is already in production!
