Ladies enjoyed an away win at Westbury Wilts

OB’s Ladies win pre-season friendly away at Westbury RFC

After practically rowing our way through torrential rain, we (thankfully!) arrived to a patch of Wiltshire sunshine. Super back row Vicky Evans stood in as Captain due to certain persons abandoning us in favour of Edinburgh Fringe, four fifteen minute quarters was agreed upon, and we kicked off at 14:30 to a clubhouse full of spectators ready to cheer on Westbury and OB’s women.

With OB’s starting a player down, due to a geographically disorientated fullback, Westbury took an early lead with two tries scored in the first few minutes. Undeterred, good hands and quick feet from Aimée Kelly put the first points on the scoreboard for OB’s.

Making up for lost time, “who needs a warm up” Natalie Eric Kwatia finally pulled on the 15 shirt and scored a training ground try from a quick ball out of the scrum. Twinkle toes Nat danced around the Westbury defence for a second try, and put down another five points early in the second quarter. Needless to say, the lateness is forgiven on grounds of being awesome.

Tiring in the scrum, we let Westbury back in the game by giving away an easy try in the third quarter.

Following some collapsing scrums and injury, we went uncontested for the final few scrums and ended with a stupendous final quarter. Everyone loves a prop try, and a rampaging run from ball fortress Alex Walsh delivered: that ball was going over the line regardless of how many defenders hung off her! Not to be outdone, OB’s scrum half legged it from our own 22, straight under the posts for an easy conversion by Lucy Stone.

Epic defending in the final throes saw a Westbury ball held up over the line, and a stupendous “last (wo)man standing” tackle from Tonika Kelly in her first ever game. The final whistle went at 17-27, following what can only be described as a netball pass out of the pitch (“throw it out, THROW IT OUT” – thanks Aimee!).

Outstanding team spirit all round, and great performances from newbies Tonika, Linzi Rollings and Nicola Gledhill. Brilliant show from Rhi Williams at ten, and Kel George in her first game contested hooker. Honorary shout out to Taine for being possibly the only toddler ever to entertain himself quietly with fractions for a whole game sans Mummy, and Westbury’s “fanny of the field” for falling up the stairs and breaking her hand on the way to the game.

In related news, following a 100% injury rate in the second row, if anyone fancies jumping a couple metres in the air or scrumming down behind our fab front three, we train Wednesday’s from 7pm at Old Bristolians RFC, Failand.
